3. Butter and bread are expensive. [Explanation : here butter and bread refer to commodities  hence the verb it takes is plural]
4. Neither the farmer nor his sons are attending the wedding. [Explanation : when two nouns are joined by a double conjunction the number of the verb depends on the number of the noun it is close to.In this sentence since the verb is close to the second noun which is plural the number of the verb is also plural]
5. The farmer along with his sons is not attending the wedding. [Explanation : when the two nouns are joined by a subordinating conjunction the number of the verb depends on the number of the first noun.In the above sentence since the first noun is singular the number of the verb is also singular]
