Dear student ,
One of the exams that does lay some emphasis on idioms is CET . Hence it becomes important for a student preparing for CET to understand idioms and to go through a list of idioms.
So here we are discussing idioms today.
What are idioms : they are grammatically phrases (which means group of words without verb and dependent) with implied meanings (they do not have literal meanings)
for eg. as busy as a bee does not mean the person is a bee ; but means very very busy (the way a bee is always busy collecting nectar)
How are they different from proverbs : unlike proverbs , idioms are phrases. Proverbs on the other hand are sentences with implied meanings
eg. Rome was not built in a day.
How does one learn idioms : One of the best ways of learning idioms is by understanding their origins. The way words have origin so do idioms have origins and reason for being part of a language. Based on their origin, they can be classified as follows :
- Number idioms : includes idioms derived from numbers
- Colour idioms : includes idioms derived from colour
- Literature : idioms derived from literary characters would come under this category
- animal idioms : idioms related to animal qualities are categorised under this heading
- Mythology : has also contributed immensely to idioms
- Others : includes idioms derived from human body parts , clothes and food items
Some of the idioms have some fascinating stories for their existence , which makes the entire learning process quite interesting.
