Usage Based Questions : Choose the appropriate question type

For the last couple of years CAT has emphasised more on the usage of words rather than only word meanings. Following are the various usage based questions we have seen in CAT for the last couple of years :

  • Fill in the blanks (double blanks)
  • Multiple Usage (more about these a bit later)
  • Choose the appropriate word

This post focuses more on the third type : Choose the appropriate word

A typical question in this type would look like below :

word based catalysis_14.08.14_FINAL_035

This question type was introduced in CAT in 2007 and since then has been an integral part of the paper. These question types evaluate the usage of two types of words :

  • homophones : check this link to know more about homophones : http://wp.me/p1ceFL-1xl
  • misused words : [eg. older/elder,uninterested/disinterested]

These questions are best solved by eliminating the options , but if they do come as non-MCQ then knowing the meanings of the words is the only way out.

To be able to solve these questions it is important for a student to go through a list of homophones and misused words. It would help to go through this list on regular basis and add to it any other word pairs that you come across.

As a starting point you can go through this list on homophones : homophones

Hope this helps !!!!
